Dr Abdullah Al-Bargi is Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics and has served as the Vice Dean for Development at the English language Institute (ELI) at King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, since 2010. Dr Al-Bargi is a language specialist who received his BA in English from the Department of European Languages and Literature at KAU and continued his professional training at Arizona State University from 1999-2006 with a Master's Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (MTESL) and a Ph.D. in Linguistics/Rhetoric & Composition.
He is a certified site reviewer for the US-based Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), an education accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. He is also a member of the Linguistic Society of America (LAS).
In his current position, Dr. Al-Bargi works to develop the academic
program at the ELI in compliance with the established standards of the
Saudi-based National Commission of Assessment and Academic Accreditation
(NCAAA) and US-based Commission on English Language Program
Accreditation (CEA) in matters related to academic accreditation, curriculum,
assessment, professional development, and quality assurance.
Dr Al-Bargi teaches BA and MA courses at the ELI and the Department of English in the College of Arts and Humanities at KAU on a variety of subjects, including basic English language courses, discourse analysis, applied linguistics, ESL teaching methods, and language & technology. He has reviewed a variety of academic projects, including the learning outcomes of English departments in Saudi universities for the National Center for Assessment in Higher Education (Qiyas) and international publishers' ESL textbooks. He has also conducted workshops on the standards of the European Foundation of Quality Managements (EFQM) and reviewed the administrative performance of some organizations based on the EFQM Excellence Model.
He regularly takes part in international TESOL conferences such as TESOL Convention, TESOL Arabia, and IATEFL. He also has a list of articles related to TESOL published in a variety of international peer-reviewed journals.
He is currently actively engaged in research seeking to enhance insights into English language learning and instructional processes within the Saudi context, based on internationally-recognized standards.
Dr Al-Bargi also has a passion for journalism. He served as the editorial supervisor of the Saudi Gazette and Arab News; Saudi Arabia’s two English-language newspapers. His service included advising on editorial content and management, in addition to writing his own news stories and op-ed pieces. He also worked as a TV reporter and anchor for the "All Sports" Show, Channel 2, Saudi TV.
